Woohoo, road trip! Keith and I had been planning for some time to take a week to go up and visit some of the seasonal "nacht" (Christmas) markets up in Germany. We were so excited to be heading back up to the Deutschland!
Europe had been having some crazy storms and sure enough we hit snow just outside of Florence as we were heading north on the A-1!

Crazy! It was really a winter wonderland just an hour and a half north of where we live!
It was pretty darn cold outside...
The snow tapered off not too long after and we didn't pick it up again until we were in the Alto Adige area and heading in Austria.
They heavily salt the roads here, which is something neither one of us are used to, and between the crud being thrown up from the road, the snow and how cold it was our windshield was just not getting clean and it was really hard to actually see the road.
We stopped at a gas station for more window washing fluid made specifically to de-ice and tried to flush out the fluid left in the car since it obviously had been watered down. Ahhh...much better! We actually could see! Considering it was snowing heavily we wanted to be sure we could see the road as good as possible, better safe than sorry!
Traffic moved pretty well and the highway was still clear of snow. We decided to overnight in Munich as Keith needed to try to find a German phone SIM card and we didn't want to get stuck driving too late in this weather. We had just switched to iPhones and using a handy dandy application I was able to find a Holiday Inn Express just off the freeway near a Vodaphone store. Perfect!
Keith checked us in and then we asked for a nearby recommendation for dinner, Bavarian food only, please!
It was a packed restaurant, warm and served beer! Sign us up!
We ordered some of Keith's favorite dish, obatzda.
I had a 1/4 portion of roasted duck, the house specialty and absolutely delicious.
Keith had roasted succulent pork, another fantastic dish.
The restaurant was near the Munich airport and every night at 10:00 p.m. had a paper airplane event. They would pass out a piece of paper to make into an airplane and you'd do your best to make something that would fly really far.
Being that we were in our own room I'm not sure if everyone else was doing it but since we had the whole room to ourselves we had plenty of space to test fly our planes and perfect our designs!

They flew quite well although we didn't win any prizes. Oh well! I'll let my dad be the airplane builder in the family. We drove back through the snow to our hotel and sat at the bar for a glass of wine with some other hotel guests. I forgot how much I enjoy white wine from Germany.
It was pretty humorous watching them try to put their Christmas tree together and having to ask the guests to help!

We finished up our wine, headed back to our room and called it a night. Tomorrow Nuremburg!
