I'm back and blogging the dolce Italian vita which is always an adventure! There are still some missing gaps in the blog but I'll be filling those in and posting about it when I do.  Spring is in the air and the festa season is starting, there will be plenty to blog about!

preggio castagna festa 2009 Print

One of our favorite festivals of the year was finally here; the Preggio Sagra della Castagna (chestnut)!

Once a year the tiny little hilltop town of Preggio opens up its doors for a whole weekend to host a fantastic little chestnut festival.

It is a good 40 minute drive from Cortona, parking is usually not very close and hard to find, it normally is cold and a bit stormy out but the food is great, the people are warm and it is a fun little festa to attend.

The festa is held throughout town in the cantina part of most people's homes.

Each little stop offers something different, some offer soups, some pasta plates, others meat or dessert.

The fun part is following everyone through town and stopping at each place to sample their wares.

This year it was really windy which meant it was quite cold out.  We chose to have some barely soup that was delicious and helped warm us up.

We found another place that was quite popular that was offering lamb skewers.  People were ordering them by the dozen.

In one of the little piazzas they were playing music and people were dancing although I think everyone was just trying to keep warm!

We ducked into another place for a meat plate.

In the main piazza there were a lot of people working on roasting chestnuts.

There is nothing quite as good as a freshly roasted chestnut!  People were lined up waiting for the savory warm chestnuts.

We ate well, somehow stayed warm and really enjoyed the little festa!  Dining in the bottom part of people’s homes really makes you feel connected with the cute little town.

Grazie Preggio!
