This morning we were off to visit the palace of Nymphenburg!

Munich is such an easy city to navigate and the efficiency of public transportation makes it a breeze!

Image

It was only a 20 minute ride from the Hauptbahnhof to Nymphenburg on a tram with a good view of the city during the ride.

Upon exiting the tram and walking towards the palace grounds I had the realization that I had been here before, almost 15 years ago!  Yikes!

The palace is quite impressive as you walk up to towards the grounds...

Nymphenburg is a summer palace built for Ferdinand and Henrietta of Savoy in honor of the birth their son.

Just to prove we really were here...

The lakes in front of the palace are really pretty extensive with a lot of birds enjoying the protected grounds.

The swans were trying to interact with us, very obviously fluffing themselves up and arranging their wings just so to attract attention.   I can't decide if they resemble women or men!  It was pretty entertaining.

It took us a little while to find the ticket office and entrance to the palace, but when we did there was a map of the grounds in front that served only to emphasize how HUGE this place was!

The ticket allows you entry into some parts of the palace, the first part being a large ballroom with even larger chandeliers.

(Note to self: When building castle, be sure to order everything in XXL sizes, including rooms, lighting, etc)

Continuing on our tour to "inside" parts of the palace, Keith directed us to our next destination.

Yet more perspectives of the massive palace and grounds...

Included in our ticket was the Carriage House which was actually pretty interesting, hosting horse carriages used by the royalty dating back hundreds of years and in amazing condition.

Although considering some of these had only been used once for special coronations or events, it isn't difficult to understand why they were well preserved!

We wandered around outside on the grounds for a while, although it was pretty chilly and the gardens were a bit drab since it was still winter here and nothing was in season or flowering.  I could see how gorgeous it must be during the spring and summer when everything is in bloom.

And that concludes our tour!  In all, great place to visit and walk around freely (and for free) in the extensive gardens, but I would skip the inside tour.
