There is something about being on an island in the Caribbean that just makes me wake up early in the morning completely refreshed.
Maybe it has to do a bit with the time difference or it is just the clean air. Whatever it is I took full advantage of it and we walked over to our local beach, Dawn Beach, at 8:00 a.m. Dawn Beach is a gorgeous little beach on the Dutch side, just bordering the French side. It probably was about a 10 minute walk to just go down the street in front of the house we were staying in and cut down through a small trail directly to the beach. Nice! What a beautiful sight and a great reward for a little hiking around the area! This is what I picture, when I picture paradise, and I was happy to be living it! Keith went up to the beach bar to grab us a drink and I settled in on the beach, happy and enjoying it with all my soul. I really think I was born to live in a tropical environment. Life ain't all that bad with a rum punch in hand, on the beach with your honey on a Caribbean island. Nope, not bad at all. Our good friends Dax and Lili were arriving in the afternoon and we had promised to pick them up. It wasn't such a bad deal since we hadn't seen them since last year and we were really looking forward to their arrival! We headed down towards Phillipsburg and then across the island towards Simpson Bay where the airport is located. This kind of gives you an idea of the roads on the island; this was the general size and condition of them. We arrived early to the airport because we wanted to check out Sunset Beach Bar, a front and center seat to the airplane arrivals that come in literally just over the beach before landing. It actually is a really pretty beach, but watch out for low flying objects! We waited for our friends and tried to beat the heat with another refreshing rum punch, it was REALLY warm out. Yum! We made sure to be ready and have the best seat in the house for viewing their arrival; I was hoping to catch it all on video. I had a couple dry runs that ended up being puddle jumpers but soon it was time and we were convinced it should be this one...
...but it was the wrong airline. Bummer. Then another grey dot in the sky started coming closer and this time I just KNEW it was them...
Haha! It was their flight! We paid for our drinks, grabbed the car and drove over to the airport arrivals to meet them. Yeah! Welcome to St. Maarten Dax and Lili! They were tired and hungry, so we drove back to the Sunset Beach Bar for lunch! Original, I know. We had a few more chances to watch the landing flights and the idiots who would stand out on the beach underneath the flight path catching some serious sand blasting from the engines. After lunch we drove Lili and Dax to their hotel in Phillipsburg, spotting one of the many herds of goats you find on the island along the way. Our friends had also experienced flight problems and with only a few hours of sleep Lili was soon checking into her bed for the night. After hanging out with Dax for a while, cooling off in the ocean, we left them to rest and headed back to Dawn Beach. We took advantage of sunset and our pool just above the ocean, not a bad way to enjoy the last light of the day! For dinner we hit up a VERY local place suggested by our host, Ella. It was a little restaurant in the French Quarter called Yvette's that was Creole style food. The food was GREAT, quite tasty, very local and superbly flavored. Yet another great find on the island and another really enjoyable day. Tomorrow starts our cruise!!!
